Kuss Quartet
Based in Berlin, the Kuss Quartet, celebrated for their exciting programmes as well as their sincere, honest and captivating interpretations, are regular guests at the most renowned international concert halls and the most prestigious festivals.
The Kuss Quartet has given much thought to restoring the string quartet to the cutting edge of cultural and compositional life. Their repertoire extends from the Renaissance and Baroque through to the present. They have studied the works of György Kurtag and Helmut Lachenmann with the composers and given workshops at the Hamburg Musikhochschule.
The quartet frequently combine sound and word in concert introductions, lecture recitals and their own concert series at the Hamburg Laeiszhalle. In their series ‘Kuss Plus’ at the Berlin nightclub Watergate, they collaborate with singers, comedians and hip-hop artists, succeeding in bringing new young audiences to concerts in new and unconventional venues.
The quartet has recorded with ECM and Sony BMG. In autumn 2007, following a successful Haydn CD, the highly acclaimed CD ‘Bridges’ was released by Sony BMG, spanning works from Orlando di Lasso and Dowland to Adès, Kurtag and Stravinsky.
The ensemble also forms artistic collaborations with artists such as Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Kim Kashkashian, Paul Meyer, Kirill Gerstein and Miklós Perényi, and has won a number of first prizes, including the Borciani Competition and the Deutscher Musikrat’s first prize in 2002. In 2003 the quartet was chosen by the European Concert Hall Organisation for the ‘Rising Stars’ series.
